What does it take to be a successful Public Speaker?

As I sat down this morning to start writing, I knew I was going to write about the benefits of public speaking. I had no idea where I was going to start. I had a writer’s block! I could not decide how to get out of it, and that is when it hit me.

I would start with the letter A.

That’s right; keep it simple.

So, what can we put together with the letter A?

I’ve got it! We could talk about attitude and having the right mindset about public speaking.

Most people I meet in my workshops talk about the fear of public speaking and or the fear of being judged. They are both fear-based and limiting thoughts.

Remember, there is No Fear of public speaking, and when you feel like you’re being judged, understand that you are, and your only goal is to get over it. We are being judged every single day on what we say what we do how we look, and it’s none of our business what other people think about us.

If you want to go out and professionally present yourself, there are certain things you need to do. Let’s start with your attitude.

First and foremost, what is an attitude and why can having the right approach always be more powerful than having a poor attitude?

To me, attitude is a combination of three different things. Read on to learn more.

Number One: What are your thoughts on Public Speaking?

What do we think about public speaking?  Is it frightening, scary, or do we think of it as a tool that can create more income, give us raises and promotions, and help us get our product out to serve others?

Any way we look at it, everything starts with our thoughts, and our thoughts make us feel a certain way. Think about it. How do you think about public speaking? How is it making you feel? Does your heart race? Do you get nervous? Do you get scared?

People ask me all the time; do you still get nervous when you speak? I always remind them I certainly do I still get butterflies, but the thing is I learned how to make my butterflies fly in formation. I have learned how to embrace these feelings. I can look at it as nervousness, or I can look at it as excitement. Either way, my body, and mind react the same way, so I look at it as being excited. I do not focus on being nervous.

Remember, our thoughts become our feelings, and our feelings become our actions. How are you thinking?

How does it make you feel when it comes to public speaking?

Number Two: How do you feel about Public Speaking?

What you are thinking, and feeling is going to be the driving force behind your behavior.

Start to think differently about public speaking, and you will begin to feel different about public speaking. Then your actions will undoubtedly change, and you will become better when it comes to public speaking. Keep that in mind when you start to think about public speaking remember, you must CREATE the right mindset that will allow you to be better at public speaking.

Number Three: How do your thoughts and feelings make you behave?

I look at it this way – Be – Believe – Behave – Become.

If you want to be a public speaker, you must get up every morning and think you are a public speaker. Once you believe you are a public speaker, you will start to behave like a public speaker. Once you act like a public speaker, you will indeed become a public speaker.

Yes, I have used the word, public speaker many times lol.

Attitude controls everything! We need the proper mindset in our life; no matter what we think about we become. So, be careful what you are focusing on!

The great German philosopher and writer, Goethe, put it this way: “Before you can do something, you must be something.”

As you develop a great attitude towards public speaking, you will start to realize that you’ve already placed yourself on the road to being an effective public speaker.

It is normal to worry about making a good impression. Remind yourself that the most exciting people are rarely perfect! Since your mind can hold only one thought at a time, make each idea you keep constructive and positive. Radiate the attitude of well-being and confidence, the person who knows where he or she is going. When you do, you will find all sorts of good things happening to you.
